No Impact Man Documentary

I saw an advertisement for this movie and wanted to share it with you all! http://www.noimpactdoc.com

Here’s a quick synopsis:

Colin Beavan decides to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for the next year.

It means eating vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator. It also means no elevators, no television, no cars, busses, or airplanes, no toxic cleaning products, no electricity, no material consumption, and no garbage.

No problem – at least for Colin – but he and his family live in Manhattan. So when his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife Michelle and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray, the No Impact Project has an unforeseen impact of its own.

Watch the trailer here: http://www.noimpactdoc.com/trailer.php. Movie opens at Landmark Theaters in San Diego October 2nd!

You can even sign up to live no impact for a week! They’ll put you on a team and guide you through the steps day-by-day. Sign up at www.noimpactproject.org!

While surfers are often dedicated environmentalists, their boards are not exactly mother natures best friend. Surfboards contain some pretty awful toxins, so when a board breaks, those chemicals have traditionally found a new home in a landfill. Now, however, San Diego surfers can drop off their busted up boards at the Miramar Recycling Center for free!

The boards are sent to a local company called Eco Built, where they are ground up and used as a filler in concrete mixtures. The Miramar Recycling Center is located at 5165 Convoy St., San Diego, CA 92111.

See the PDF flyer for additional details about the surfboard recycling program.

Sailboat on Lake Wawasee, Syracuse Indiana
Photo from adoug28813

On what is traditionally one of the busiest weekends of the year on Lake Wawasee in Syracuse Indiana, the waters were pleasantly calm. With gas prices at the marina over $5 a gallon, it was no shock that the line to fill up was mysteriously absent.

The water, which is normally churned up and murky by late august, was very refreshing and clear. Beautiful underwater plants (which btw we had been taught were “weeds” since childhood, were easily visible in shallow water. The buzz of personal watercraft was replaced by people laughing and swimming on the pier.

The smooth waters were also a welcoming change for the many sailboats that silently graced the lake. The gorgeous and colorful sails of catamarans and other sailboats took advantage of the consistent breeze to weave their way across the lake. Not only do small sailboat owners not worry about the price of gas, they can forget about oil changes, engine maintenance and noise. Sailing is a sport that can be enjoyed alone in a small boat or can be an amazing team-building experience. Check out US Sailing to learn more about sailing!
